Why move

Why European shops move off Shopify.

  • Transaction surcharges on local payment methods. Shopify Payments doesn't cover iDEAL or Bancontact in most set-ups; using Mollie means Shopify adds 0.5–2 % on top of Mollie's fee. On €200k a year that's €1,000–4,000 for nothing.
  • App stack creep. Reviews, invoices with valid EU numbering, B2B pricing, multilingual, cookie consent — each one is a monthly app. €150–400 a month is common.
  • EU invoicing and VAT. Sequential invoice numbers, OSS rates, reverse charge with VIES validation — Shopify needs apps; WooCommerce does it natively with a plugin or two.
  • Ownership. Shopify is a rental. The theme, data model and checkout are theirs. If they change pricing or policy, you adapt.
  • Content and SEO limits. Rigid URL structure (/collections/, /products/), limited blog, no real control over schema or technical SEO.

Shopify is a fine product. It's expensive for a Benelux shop paying for iDEAL twice and renting features WordPress gives away.

The process

How the switch happens.

01

Audit

We read your Shopify store, apps, theme customisations and traffic. You get a written migration plan: what maps directly, what needs a decision, what's not worth carrying.

02

Build on staging

WooCommerce set up on your new host, theme built or configured, payments in test mode. Shopify keeps running untouched.

03

First data import

Everything above, imported and verified. You review products, prices and a sample of orders.

04

Redirect map

Every old URL matched to a new one. Collections, products, blog, pages, plus the Shopify-specific patterns Google has indexed.

05

Freeze and final sync

On switch day, a last import of orders and customers created since the first import. Usually under an hour.

06

DNS switch

Domain points to the new shop. Shopify stays live as read-only for 30 days as a safety net.

07

Post-switch

Search Console monitored daily for a month; crawl errors fixed; rankings tracked against pre-switch baseline.

Typical downtime: none. Typical ranking impact with a correct redirect map: a dip of a few days, recovered within 2–4 weeks.

Questions

Migration questions, answered.

Will my customers need new passwords?

Yes — Shopify never exports password hashes. Customers receive a "set your password" email on first login. Their addresses and order history are there.

What about my Shopify domain email and DNS?

Email is unaffected if it's on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. We move DNS records carefully and leave email untouched.

Do I lose my reviews?

No — Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo and Stamped all export. We import to an on-site reviews system so you stop paying for the app.

How long does it take?

Two weeks for a standard shop including staging review; the switch itself is one afternoon.

Can you keep my current design?

Yes, we can rebuild the look in a custom theme. Most clients take the chance to improve it.

Will I really save money?

Do the sum: Shopify plan + apps + payment surcharge per year, minus WooCommerce hosting and a care plan. For most shops over €100k a year, the migration pays for itself within a year.
